Tsvetana Pironkova is in the midst of a sensational run at the 2020 US Open. Little was expected of the Bulgarian baseliner, who last Tuesday was playing her first match since taking time off the tennis tour after Wimbledon in 2017 to start a family.
Pironkova defeated Ludmila Samsonova, Garbine Muguruza and Donna Vekic en route to the round of 16 – all impressive results on paper. However, there are caveats for each result. All 3 players should be described as attacking, risk-taking players but each played a poor match – especially Vekic – and this allowed an admittedly solid playing Pironkova a path to victory.
