I wasn’t impressed at all by Mark Selby in his win over Jordan Brown. He really did struggle. He’s been lacking a consistent spark for as long as I can remember. The long format here of best-of-25 will be much more to his liking but he lost to a qualifier in this round last year (Gary Wilson 13-10) and it wouldn’t be a huge shock if it happened again versus Noppon Saengkham.
In comparison, Saengkham was terrific in his pummelling win over Shaun Murphy. I did not see that coming. He compiled eight breaks over 50 (no tons) but it was his all-round game that impressed me. He kept putting Murphy under pressure on the baulk cushion and Murphy has never been the best safety player. The break Noppon made in the final frame to clinch the 10-4 win, was sublime, its worth a watch. No panic whatsoever. Saengkham held his nerve brilliantly.
