About six years ago, David Gilbert and Kurt Maflin were of similar rank, just outside the world’s top 32. Maflin was even above him in 2014. They were very even. Funnily enough, their games are also quite similar too, both having silky cue actions and are heavy scorers.
Maflin is making just his second Crucible appearance after performing very well on debut in 2015, losing to Mark Selby in a decider. He was 5-3 down in the penultimate round of qualifying this year but won the last three frames against Joe O’Connor. He won ten on the spin against Matt Selt in the last qualifier, winning comfortably, 10-1.
