They first faced each other in 1987 as juniors when Mark Williams was 12-years-old and Ronnie O’Sullivan was 11. 33 years later, and still going strong, they face off for the first time since 2017 in their 46th meeting.
There last two matches were in quarter-finals, and this is their 11th quarter-final overall against one another with Ronnie leading 8-2. If you thought that was dominant, wait until you hear O’Sullivan’s record over Williams, excluding Championship league since 2003. He’s won 19 of their last 20 meets – a scary statistic. In just triple crowns, Ronnie has beaten Mark; 6-2 and 6-5 in 2016, 13-6 in 2012 (Worlds), 13-10 (Worlds) and 6-5 in 2010, 13-7 (Worlds) in 2008, and 13-11 (Worlds) in 2006. The only time Williams has beaten O’Sullivan in a triple crown was way back in 2000 at the UK when he was top dog in the World and Ronnie was a ‘mad man’.
