Stoke City head into matchday three looking for their first points of the season, which they will attempt to claim against Derby County at the Bet365 Stadium. It has been a nightmare start for Nathan Jones’ men, with them losing their opening two games of the season. Derby County, on the other hand, will be looking to add to the four points they have secured from their opening two outings. When these sides last met at the Bet365 Stadium, Stoke City narrowly took the three points with a 2-1 win.
Nathan Jones will be desperately wanting his side to secure their first win of the season but after their first two performances of the season, they need a drastic change in fortunes. After their recent poor displays, the Potters head into their third game of the season having lost their last three games on the bounce. Their first defeat came against Leicester City in their final pre-season friendly, which was followed by their opening defeat of the season against Queens Park Rangers, who beat them 2-1. Their latest outing had them go up against Charlton Atheltic, who made light work of the Potters as they eased to a 3-1 victory.
Phillip Cocu will be pleased with his side’s start to the new Championship season, with them currently sat in sixth place after securing four points from their first two fixtures. A strong first-half performance in their opening game of the season against Huddersfield Town saw them come away with three points. Tom Lawrence’s brace proved to be enough as they went on to win 2-1 at the John Smith’s Stadium. Their previous outing saw them face a stubborn Swansea City, who held them a 0-0 draw at Pride Park.
Ryan Shawcross is the only injury absentee for Nathan Jones to contend with. Sam Clucas bagged his first goal of the season against QPR during the opening game of the season and has been one of the Potters few stand out players, so expect to see him in the heart of midfield. Thomas Ince scored his side’s only goal last time out against Charlton Atheltic and should keep his spot behind the attackers.
Derby have a number of injury concerns coming into this clash, with Andre Widsom (knee), Jayden Bogle (ankle), George Thorne (calf) and Duane Holmes (hamstring) all doubtful. Ikenchi Anya may be facing another spell on the sidelines, with the midfielder struggling with a serious muscle problem.
Despite from their horrendous start to the new Championship season, Stoke City will arrive at their home ground as clear favourites in the bookie’s eyes. You can back Stoke to win at a price of 2.15, while their opponents sit at 3.60. After picking up two defeats it is hard to see Stoke claiming the full three points, so backing Derby County draw no bet seems like a safe option. Despite conceding in both games, Stoke have also got themselves on the scoresheet in both fixtures and we fancy both teams to score in this one.
