Two of the league’s form sides go head to head in what looks to be a very even clash.
Both teams go in to this fixture in brilliant form, their best of the season, respectively. Both sides have just one defeat in their last six. Motherwell have edged it on the points tally, taking 15 to Hearts 13. But regardless, this looks to be a tight contest between two sides who are flying of late. Only Celtic better Motherwell’s recent form, and that is only based on their goal difference over the last six. It’s a similar story for Hearts, they’re only bettered by the before mentioned sides and Rangers and again Rangers only better them on goal difference.
This superb run of form has really kicked both sides seasons in to high gear, particularly the visitors, who lie in fifth place in the league, just three points behind Kilmarnock and Aberdeen. For Motherwell it has eased any fears of a relegation battle, pulling them miles clear of the bottom end of the table and allowing them to look up rather than over their shoulders.
Hearts may be buoyed by the fact that despite their recent form, Motherwell have struggled at home this campaign. Six of their 10 wins have actually come on the road. Hearts have managed six wins from 12 away trips, so will fancy their chances of taking all three points.
The hosts are available at a price of 2.88, with the visitors the slight favourites at 2.4.
Goals could be scarce
Despite their strong form, neither side have been overly prolific in their last six matches. Motherwell have won four games by just one goal, two of those being slender 1-0 wins. It’s a similar story for Hearts, who’s biggest margin of victory in their current run has been 2-0, their last league match finished goalless at home to Livingston.
Both sides have had issues throughout the season with goal scoring, Hearts have registered 31 in their 25 games, Motherwell just 27 in the same number of games. This game looks to be very competitive but could also be very cagey, with both sides eager to maintain heir unbeaten run. The draw is priced at 3.1, a score draw is available at 4.33.
In the last six between these two, there has been one draw, four wins for Hearts and just the one for Motherwell. Hearts have won the last three meetings, two of those finished 1-0, with the League Cup game in September producing a thrilling 4-2 win for the Jambos.
Motherwell’s last victory over Sunday’s visitors was in April of last year, when they won 2-1 in The Scottish Cup.
This match up is very different to the ones before though, as a result of the run these two are on, it’s very difficult to call what we’re going to see.
Strikers need to step up
This game looks likely to be settled by a single goal, and both sides will be looking for their strikers to produce a moment of quality in order to separate the two. For Hearts they will look towards their talisman: Steven Naismith. Naismith has found the net nine times this season, five mire than any other Hearts player, his experience and predatory instinct could steal the advantage for the visitors.
Motherwell’s goals have been quite evenly spready, which you could view as a positive or a negative. Their main goal threat lies with Danny Johnson, who has six this season, and Curtis Main; who only has three goals. They added Ross McCormack to the squad in January, the 32 year old is yet to score but will be chomping at the bit to get off the mark, he’s the bookies favourite to score first along with Heart’s target man Uche Ikpeazu, both are priced at 6.5.
