Second host first in Ligue 1 Conforama on Sunday as Lille look to delay PSG’s title party and cement themselves in second position behind their illustrious opponents.
Another year, another title
It’s all been a bit too easy for PSG this season and bar Monaco’s stunning campaign in 2016/17, PSG have won the title every season since 2012. They are now 20 points clear of Lille at the top of the table and need just one win to mathematically secure a league title that was sealed long ago.
The Parisians have been devastating this season. They’ve hit 89 goals in 30 Ligue 1 games, so just under three per game on average. It’s an exceptional return and a quick glance at the scoring charts will show you exactly how it’s been possible. Three of the leagues top four scorers turn out for PSG. Kylian Mbappe leads the way with 27, Edinson Cavani has helped himself to 17, Neymar has 13 and they’ve been backed up by nine from Angel Di Maria.
Mbappe looks set to return to the starting eleven for this match after sitting on the bench last time out, however Cavani and Neymar are still ruled out through injury. Di Maria is also missing which nullifies a lot of PSG’s threat and Mbappe will need to be on top form to drive them to victory here. The title would most likely already be sealed if Cavani and Neymar were fit; after a couple of horror show misses from Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting potentially cost them recent victories. He’ll likely start again here and at 2.63 anytime I’d air on the side of caution, with The Cameroonian low on confidence.
If you return to that list of the leagues top scorers, you’ll notice the PSG trifactor are not the top three. One man steps in in second position – Nicolas Pepe. The Ivorian has hit 18 goals for Lille this season and has been the breakout talent of the league and it’s left him being touted by Europe’s biggest clubs. The winger has been extremely consistent and with PSG facing some injury issues I fancy Lille to have a real go here and Pepe to score anytime at 2.4 could be a great selection.
These two top the form table as well as the league standings and there’s a real hope that we could see a cracker here. In the last five meetings between these two there has been over 2.5 goals scored in every single one add in to that that PSG have hit at least two goals in six of their last seven but they’re taking on a side with just two home defeats all campaign and just one loss in their last 12 and you’ve got a real recipe for a proper match up. Over 2.5 goals is priced at 1.6 in this match, I’d be leaning towards both teams to score at 1.57 as PSG have some absentees in defence and without their full plethora of attacking options they may settle for a draw and wait for their title party at the Parc Des Princes.
Lille have a real point to prove here and I think it’ll be very tough for PSG to beta them, especially with their excellent home record. I think Lille win or draw at 2.0 has a real chance and it’s not often I’d go against the French champions but all things considered this is a huge opportunity for a bit of a surprise.
Lille draw no bet @ 3.3
Both teams to score @ 1.57
Nicolas Pepe to score anytime @ 2.4
