Ajax return to league action after their heroics in The Champions League and it’s still all to play for as they try to hunt down their first title since 2014.
And you thought they were good in Europe?
If Ajax do manage to claim The Eredivisie title this year they’re going to have done it in some fashion. The Amsterdam side have scored an eye watering 106 goals in their 30 games thus campaign and have conceded just 28 goals which has given them a +12 goal difference advantage over PSV who are currently level on points with them. PSV have actually lost less games but they have been unable to match Ajax for their sheer number of wins; 24 and counting this season and an opportunity to heap the pressure on PSV, who play on Sunday, with another win here.
All of Ajax’s league defeats this season have come on the road. Yet they still have the greatest points haul away from home out of any side in the Dutch top flight. Three of their four losses away from home have come in their last eight away games but I feel like their performances in Europe were a real turning point for this young side. With all due respect to Groningen, Ajax’s losses have come to the bigger sides in the league and after wins at Real Madrid and Juventus in The Champions League this wonderful side will fear absolutely nobody. Ajax are 1.29 to win the match, I’d advise adding goals in to that selection to increase the value. Ajax and over 2.5 match goals at 1.53 is probably a better choice.
Groningen struggling for goals
Saturday’s hosts have scored just four goals in their last six outings, however they have only shipped two in that time. Also they have suffered just one defeat in their past 10 matches which is rather impressive and has helped to haul them up the table over recent weeks. This has impacted their price to win but only slightly. It’s a huge credit to Ajax’s quality that the hosts are as high as 8.5 to win this match given their recent solid displays.
The lack of goals is a huge worry though. As realistically to beat Ajax you’re going to need to be finding the net. Ajax have scored on average more than three goals per game this season so I don’t fancy Groningen’s chances o scoring four, given that they’ve only managed to score that many in their last six, never mind in one game. Groningen are at 1.4 to score over 0.5 goals in the match, with both teams to score at 1.5, personally I’d be avoiding both selections as I don’t see the value given their recent output in front of goal.
Go big on Ajax
This side are at the top of their game right now. They’re full of confidence and look unstoppable as they motor on towards hopefully claiming the title. I can’t see Groningen stopping the huge amount of attacking impetus that the visitors will impose. Dusan Tadic, Hakim Ziyech and Klaas Jan-Huntelaar are all in to double figures for goals this season. There’s goals all over the pitch which makes them such a difficult team to Nullify. We saw Donny Van De Beek getting on the score sheet against Juventus and he’s approaching 10 league goals as well. There’s just so many avenues for Ajax to get a goal that I struggle to see many of the sides in this division containing them; given that Europe’s best didn’t even manage it. I’d be looking for a handicap bet here, -2 at 2.88 looks like a cracking price.
Ajax and O/2.5 goals @ 1.53
Ajax -2 @ 2.88
Ajax to be winning at half time and full time @ 1.83
