Charlton have given themselves a huge chance of reaching the League One play-off final after picking up a 2-1 victory from the first leg at the Keepmoat Stadium. The Addicks notched two goals thanks to Lyle Taylor and Joe Aribo, however, they will have been disappointed not to keep a clean sheet as they allowed Doncaster to get themselves back into the tie with a late goal from Matty Blair to half the deficit.
Charlton are in extremely impressive form as they have won eight of their last nine games, including the first leg in Doncaster. Lee Bowyer’s side catapulted themselves into a third-place finish thanks to this incredible run of form, and that allowed them to avoid both Portsmouth and Sunderland in the first stage of the play-offs and gain a more favourable two-legged affair against Grant McCann’s Doncaster.
These two sides met three times over the course of the regular season and they recorded a mixed bag of results. First, Charlton beat Doncaster 2-0 at The Valley in the first league meeting of the season before Doncaster won by the same score line and at the same venue in the second round of the FA Cup. Their final meeting in the regular season ended all square with a 1-1 draw at The Keepmoat.
In terms of team news for both sides, there isn’t much to report on. Jonny Williams was an absentee for Charlton during the first leg, but he will be hoping to get some minutes during the second. Igor Vetokele is still a doubt for the Addicks as he deals with a thigh problem.
Lyle Taylor will continue to lead the line for Charlton as he has done so well over the course of the 2018/19 season. The 29-year-old has 22 league goals to his name and he also opened the scoring during the first leg. Taylor will be hoping to find more as he aims to fire Charlton into the Championship.
Grant McCann has a fully fit squad to choose from ahead of the concluding leg, and it is possible that he could name an unchanged side ahead of Friday’s game.
The first bet I like the look of for the concluding fixture is under 2.5 goals at 1.75. The opposite occurred during the first leg as Charlton took a 2-1 victory, however, I am expecting a much tighter game at The Valley.
There’s no pressure on Charlton to come out all guns blazing as they have one foot in the final before a ball is kicked. The Addicks have an incredible defensive record at home having only conceded 15 goals over the 23 games they have hosted. It is also worth noting that over 2.5 goals has only been successful in one of the last six meetings between Charlton and Doncaster.
Charlton are in extremely good form and they have only lost once in their last 16 league games. Their home form is also more than impressive as they have won their last six on the bounce including back-to-back clean sheets most recently. It should have been a more convincing win for Lee Bowyer’s side during the first leg, however they let Doncaster back into it late on. Another win for the Addicks is priced at 1.86, and I fancy that to happen against a Rovers side who have only won seven away games all season, and just once in their last ten attempts away from The Keepmoat.
Under 2.5 goals @ 1.75
Charlton to win @ 1.86
