On Wednesday we see an Atletico Madrid side who rarely lose at home come up against, the Italian Champions, Juve who rarely lose away. Both teams have serious claims to win the tournament as well as the form to back their aspirations of European glory.
Atletico Madrid v Juventus
Wednesday 20th February, 20:00
Although Simeone’s Atletico Madrid have only picked up three losses all season in the league, two of those have came within the last five matches. The home side haven’t had a great February having been beaten in Andalusia by Real Betis then defeated by city rivals, Real Madrid, at home. Despite this, Atletico have been in good form at home in all competitions. In the league, the home side have notched nine wins and two draws in twelve matches. This form has continued in the Champions League. Atletico have won all three home matches in the European competition.
Goals have been key to Atletico Madrid’s home success this season. Atletico have not failed to score in any of their home matches in the La Liga, Champions League and Copa del Rey. Los Rojiblancos have amassed twenty-eight goals in seventeen home games, which means they have averaged 1.65 goals at home this season. Diego Simeone has his defence to thank for his side’s success at the Wanda Metropolitana. In all competitions, Atletico have conceded eleven goals in seventeen home matches. Which means they have averaged just 0.65 goals conceded in all competitions.
Due to conceding a lack of goals, Atletico’s record of clean sheets is at 67% for home games played in La Liga, they have also picked up two clean sheets in the three home games they have played in the Champions League. As a result of their impressive defensive efforts, in Atletico’s seventeen home matches in all competitions, six have ended with both teams scoring.
The Turin side have shown they are a capable side when playing away from home this season. In the league Juve are currently unbeaten home and away. The Bianconeri have played eleven away matches picking up ten wins and one draw. Despite losing to Swiss side Young Boys, when they were already qualified from the group, Juve have picked up two wins in their three away matches in the Champions League. Juve couldn’t replicate their away form in their Coppa Italia campaign as they were knocked out of the tournament by Atalanta in Bergamo.
Juve have been solid defensively this season. On average, Juve’s opposition have scored 0.64 goals per game in the league. Juventus have been able continue to stifle their opposition in the Champions League as they have limited their home opposition to 0.67 goals per game. With Cristiano Ronaldo spearheading the Italian champions’ attack, it’s safe to say Juve have not struggled to score this season. In thirty-two games in all competitions, Juve have scored thirty-nine goals averaging 1.22 goals per game. Ronaldo has supplied twenty of those thirty-nine Juve goals this season.
In the last six away matches, four out of six games have ended with 2.5 goals being scored. During this period, ten goals have been scored, and Juve have picked up three clean sheets.
Atletico’s, defender, Lucas Hernandez will be missing from the home side’s back line after picking up a knee injury against Real Madrid. As a result of the injury, the Frenchman has missed Atletico’s last league match against Rayo Vallecano. Madrid will also be without their midfielder Koke who picked up a thigh injury in Atletico’s league match against Huesca back in January. The midfielder hasn’t featured for Atleti since the injury.
Juventus, like Atletico, have players ruled out for the match in Madrid. The Colombian, Juan Cuadrado, will miss the match due to undergoing knee surgery on a knee injury which has ruled the winger out of action since their last Champions League in December against Young Boys. Diego Costa is also a doubt as he has missed the last two matches with a thigh injury.
The bookies have been unable to separate the two sides as the home side and the away side have been given odds of 9/5 to win the match. Going by Atletico’s record against Real Madrid and Barcelona at home this season (0 wins, 1 draw, 1 defeat), it is suggested that Atletico struggle against sides that possess higher quality players in their squads. Due to this I am inclined to believe Juve will come away with a win in this match. I would recommend a Juve to win draw no bet which insures against the game ending in a draw. Bookies give odds of 17/20 for this bet.
Despite their being few Atletico Madrid games which have ended with both teams to score, I wouldn’t rule out either side scoring in this bout, given that both sides have shown they possess impressive scoring averages as well as high quality defensive records. You can get a price of 11/10 for both teams to score in this game.
I do believe Juve will get on the scoresheet, especially with Cristiano Ronaldo playing up front for them. The Portuguese striker enjoys playing Atletico Madrid as he has scored twenty-two goals against the Rojiblancos. For Ronaldo to score anytime, bookies give odds of 13/8.
Cristiano Ronaldo to score anytime (13/8)
Juventus to win draw no bet (17/20)
Both teams to score (11/10)
