How Asian Handicap works in Football

The Asian handicap market is one which we use frequently among our tips, so it is important you have a solid understanding of what it is and how it works before you start betting on it.

“Asian handicap is a type of bet whereby the draw is removed from the equation. This market gives the underdogs a head start before the match starts, the advantage could be anywhere from 0.0/0.25 of a goal up to 4.0+ goals”.

Examples

Asian Handicap 0.0 (E.g Roma v Liverpool)

This bet works the same as the ‘Draw No Bet’ option, available with most bookies. Therefore there are three easy outcomes here: win, lose or refund.

Example: If Roma were playing against Liverpool and the bet was ‘Roma 0.0’ you would win the bet if Roma win the match, however if the match ended in a draw your stake would be refunded or in the case of an accumulator, the selection would be void. Alternatively, if the bet was ‘Liverpool 0.0’ you would need Liverpool to win for the bet to land but if the match is a draw, this bet would be refunded too.

A £10 bet on Roma 0.0 Asian handicap at odds of 1.90

  • Roma win – 10 x 1.90 = you win £19.00
  • Match drawn – No bet, you get your money back = £10
  • Liverpool win – you lose your bet = £0

A £10 bet on Liverpool 0.0 Asian handicap at odds of 1.95

  • Liverpool win – 10 x 1.95 = you win £19.50
  • Match drawn – no bet, stake refunded = £10
  • Roma win – you lose the bet = £0

Asian Handicap 0.25 (E.g Bournemouth v Newcastle)

This means that one side will start a quarter of a goal up, the outcomes of this are to win, win half, lose half or lose.

Example: If you bet on ‘Bournemouth -0.25’ you would win if Bournemouth win the match, if the match ends in a draw, you will lose half of your stake and the other half will be refunded. If you bet on ‘Newcastle +0.25’ you need a Newcastle win to land the bet, however if the match is a draw you will win half of the profit returns as well as your stake back.

A £10 bet on Bournemouth -0.25 Asian handicap at odds of 2.00

  • Bournemouth win – 10 x 2 = you win £20
  • Match drawn – lose half of your stake = £5
  • Newcastle win – you lose all your stake = £0

A £10 bet on Newcastle +0.25 Asian handicap at odds of 1.80

  • Newcastle win – 10 x 1.80 = you win £18
  • Match drawn – half your stake is refunded, the other half wins. £5 refund + £5 x 1.8 = £14
  • Bournemouth win – you lose your stake = £0

Asian Handicap 0.5 (E.g Germany v England)

In this market line, one team begins the match with half a goal advantage, there is no way of refunds in this one, you either win or lose.

Example: If you bet ‘Germany -0.5’ the only way for you to win this bet is for Germany to win, any other outcome will result in a loss. Alternatively, if you bet ‘England +0.5’ you need England to either win the match or draw for you to win and be paid out.

A £10 bet on Germany -0.5 Asian handicap at odds of 1.80

  • Germany win – 10 x 1.8 = you win £18
  • Match drawn – you lose = £0
  • England win – you lose = £0

A £10 bet on England +0.5 Asian handicap at odds of 2.00

  • England win – 10 x 2 = you win £20
  • Match drawn – 10 x 2 = you win £20
  • Germany win – you lose = £0

Asian Handicap 0.75 (E.g Man City v Tottenham)

In the Asian handicap market, one side starts the match with three quarters of a goal lead. Similar to the 0.25 line, the possible outcomes of this line are win, win half, lose and lose half.

Example: If you bet on ‘Man City -0.75’ you need Man City to win by two or more goals to win the full amount, but if Man City win by a single goal you get your stake back and win half of the profit returns. If the bet was ‘Tottenham +0.75’ you would win if Tottenham won or draw the match. If Tottenham lost by a single goal you will lose half your stake and have the other half refunded.

A £10 bet on Man City -0.75 Asian handicap at odds of 1.70

  • Man City win by 2+ goals – 10 x 1.7 = you win £17
  • Man City win by 1 goal – half your stake is refunded, the other half wins – £5 + £5 x 1.7 = you win £13.50
  • Match drawn – you lose = £0
  • Tottenham win – you lose = £0

A £10 bet on Tottenham +0.75 Asian handicap at odds of 2.10

  • Tottenham win – 10 x 2.1 = you win £21
  • Match drawn – 10 x 2.1 = you win £21
  • Man City win by 1 goal – you lose half your stake, other half refunded = £5
  • Man City win by 2+ goals – you lose = £0

Asian Handicap 1.0 (E.g Fulham v Reading)

This is a simpler line of Asian handicap, it means that one side will start with a 1 goal lead. The outcomes of this bet can be win, lose or refund.

Example: If the bet is ’Fulham -1’ you will win the bet if Fulham win by two or more goals, in the case that Fulham win by a single goal the stake will be refunded. If the bet is ‘Reading +1’ you will win the bet if Reading win or draw the match, however if Reading lose by one goal you will have your stake refunded.

A £10 bet on Fulham -1.0 Asian handicap at odds of 1.80

  • Fulham win by 2+ goals – 10 x 1.8 = you win £18
  • Fulham win by 1 goal – stake refunded = £10
  • Match drawn – you lose = £0
  • Reading win – you lose =0

A £10 bet on Reading +1.0 Asian handicap at odds of 2.0

  • Reading win – 10 x 2 = you win £20
  • Match drawn – 10 x 2 = you win £20
  • Fulham win by 1 goal – stake refunded = £10
  • Fulham win by 2+ goals – you lose = £0

How to use/place Asian Handicap bets

Asian handicap markets are only available on a few bookies, so if you can’t find the market, the chances are it’s not there. If your bookie does have this market then it will often be under the tab ‘Asian Lines’ where you can find the bet under ‘Asian Handicap’ or ‘Alternative Asian Handicap’. Once you find the line you want (-0.25, -0.50 etc) then press on it to put it into you bet slip. When it is in there, there enter your stake next to the appropriate box then place bet.
